How much will I save off my power bill?

shane

By far this would have to be our most asked question.   And for good reason too!   We all love the idea of creating our own energy from the sun but we also love seeing a reduction on our quarterly power bills!

For suburban residential clients

The 4.5kW solar system is the most popular size system in the suburban areas of the Top End.  This is also the maximum size limit set by Power and Water for single phase connections (most suburban houses).   This system will have 15-18 solar panels on your roof depending on which type of panel you choose to buy.    A system this size will generate on average 21kW hours per day.   This is a very conservative rate and of course in our glorious dry season the rate may be higher on a daily basis and in our wet season with a bit of cloud cover the rate may be lower.

Now to get down to the maths of it all … stay with me …

21kWh per day
x
90 days (average power bill cycle)
x
.255399c (the standard Jacana Energy tariff for domestic customers)
=

$483.00 per quarter.

Based on Country Solar NT’s pricing this means that your 4.5kW system would have generated approximtaley $2000 in eletcricty per year and therefore paid for itself in 5 ½ years.

I live in the rural area, can I have a bigger system?

Yes!  For rural clients with a 3 phase electricity connection you are allowed to have up to a 6kW system.   A system this size of 19-24 panels will generate on average 28kW hours per day.  Again the same fluctuations will apply for the wet and dry season but this figure is a safe bet for our projections.

The maths again ….

28kWh per day
x
90 days (average power bill cycle)
x
.255399c (the standard Jacana Energy tariff for domestic customers)
=

$642.00 per quarter.

Based on Country Solar NT’s pricing this means that your 6kW system would have generated approximately $2500 in electricty per year and therefore paid for itself in 4-6 years depending on the type of system and inverter you choose to buy.  It’s also worth noting that these calculations have been based on an unshaded, north facing roof with a 15-20 degree pitch angle and 4.5 peak sun ours according to the Bureau of Meteorology.
